Principal's Message Wow, what a wonderful Catholic Schools Week! We are all so incredibly thankful for the generosity of our families and friends who helped contribute to our RCS Day of Giving! We were able to secure our $10,000 match and all of our students will benefit from the improvements to our school over the next year. One of the highlights of our week was celebrating the Presentation of the Lord Mass on Wednesday. Father Russ blessed our students and their candles with holy water, reminding us to go forth and live with the light of Christ as our guide. Next week, we will have Letterland Day and our 100th day of school, so our school-wide celebration of this year will keep on going. Registration is also well underway for next year; if you know of any families looking at options for Kindergarten next year, please send them our way for a tour! May God be with you Always,
Dave Jenson

Due to changes with the public school calendar there will be no late bus the following Wednesdays: February 9th, April 20th and May 11th. We are sending home a pledge sheet today for our spring HSA fundraiser in conjunction with I Love to Read Month. The Home & School Association helps fund fun school activities like the bowling outing, the Zoomobile, the Kindergarten ice cream social, and much more! They also directly support teachers by purchasing classroom materials, updating physical education and recess equipment, and providing a few wonderful staff meals throughout the course of the school year. In order to have as many students as possible attend our fun bowling outing, we are also going to push this later in the month. It will be a very attainable reward for our “I Love to Read Month” reading pledge fundraiser for our HSA. Mr. Amundson is also sending home reading logs for each week. These help our students keep track of their minutes spent reading (or being read to) and is separate from the pledge sheet, which will be returned the first week of March. Friday, February 11th will be a purple and gold school spirit non-uniform day. Our Kindergarteners will also be dressing up like they are 100 years old to celebrate our 100th day of school! In conjunction with the students receiving the sacraments of reconciliation and confirmation, Fr. Russ has invited our entire school community to attend a teaching Mass on Wednesday, February 16th at 6 pm. He will be explaining the various parts of the Mass; if you have never attended a teaching Mass before, this will be a great opportunity for your whole family to learn more about our Catholic faith. 5th grade families: Are you planning for summer yet!? We would love for your middle schooler to join us at Camp Summit 2022 this summer! Camp Summit is an overnight Catholic adventure camp for middle school youth entering grades 6-8. Nestled in the bluffs of Lanesboro, Minnesota, Camp Summit provides a fun, formative, and faith-filled experience for parish groups throughout the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. St. John's is excited to bring a parish group this year and would love to share more information with you. Please reach out to your parish or to Megan Rodriguez at St. John's (mrodriguez@sj.org) if you have a child interested in joining us for camp or if you are an adult interested in helping at Camp Summit! You can find out more information here: https://www.campsummitwinona.org/ Pope Francis has called a synod for the years 2021-2023. And you are invited to participate! Synod is a tradition of the church where we take time to walk together as a People of God. The aim of the Synod is to discern how we are “living the faith” and how, we as a Church, are achieving this together. Please contact your parish to learn more about how to participate in the Synod if you haven't already. Parishioners from St. John's are invited to gather on February 12th from 10:00am to 12:00pm, we are going to gather to listen with one another and answer the question of how our journey together takes place on different levels. The meeting will consist of prayer, a reflection offered by Father Mahon, and small group discussion centered around questions. The questions will be available before the meeting for your personal reflection. We will be collecting the different responses to send to Bishop Quinn. This meeting is open to everyone in our community; we invite you to participate either in person or virtually by registering for the event: https://sj.org/parish-synod/ Click here for the flyer. Parent Volunteers Needed – The St. Pius X HSA is planning a Family Fun Run/Walk for spring 2022 (COVID permitting). This will be a fun way to meet other St. Pius X families and enjoy some fresh air while raising money for our school. We are looking for a parent who is interested in chairing the event, as well as several parents interested in helping. Please reach out to Megan at chair.sphsa@gmail.com. In order to best utilize our staffing, our preschool morning care will start at 7 AM. If you need to drop off your child earlier than that, please let Mr. Jenson know and care will be provided on that day. Preschool parents, please use the following link to register for before and/or after school care for the coming weeks of 1/24-2/18 https://forms.gle/hVjVMJrmEVqSnZg87 If you have a student in grades 3-5, then the GATEway Science Fair is for you! This is your child’s chance to learn what it is like to be a scientist! We welcome all students - you do not need to be a GATEway member nor in a gifted services program. Before the Science Fair, think of a topic that interests you, then do an experiment at home to learn more about it. Present your experiment with pictures, words, and graphs on a display board. Bring your board to the Science Fair to explain your project to reviewers who are science professionals in our community. You'll see a fun Science Museum of Minnesota presentation and receive a certificate of participation, written reviews of your project, a snack, and a cool t-shirt! The GATEway Science Fair will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Mayo Clinic Gonda Building. Register through Community Education online at www.rochesterce.org/register, or by mailing in the registration form which can be printed from our website or downloaded here. The $12 registration fee includes a t-shirt if registration is mailed by February 2, 2022. Register early because space is more limited this year due to COVID. You can find more information about the GATEway Science Fair at www.rochestergateway.com including ideas, guides and other helpful information. Financial assistance may be available to help with the costs of preparing a project. Contact Dee at 507-722-2820, or gatewaysciencefair@gmail.com with questions. If you are interested in volunteering, we have options available every day in the lunchroom or various days in the school library. In order to volunteer, you must have completed a Virtus safe environment training within the past five years and have an up to date background check completed. Please contact Mrs. Hyke in the office if you need help getting signed up for either Virtus or to have a background check. Thank you! Please send your child to school dressed for the cooler weather. Jackets, hats, gloves, snow pants and boots will be needed. We also ask that you label all of your students belongings. We try to have outdoor recess as much as the weather permits. When picking up your child in the afternoon from After School Care, please call our Google Voice number at 507-218-7873. Mr. Amundson or the adult leader will let you know to pick up at Door 5 by the gym or outside by the playground. |
