Girls Basketball Starts Strong There is definitely optimism around the girls basketball team. New Head Coach Mark Kellen enters his first season with talent all over the court. Senior captain CJ Adamson, Augustana University commit, returns to start for her 5th consecutive season, while Juniors Vivica Bretton and Emily Bowron return to their starting roles for the second year in a row. Other key players in starting positions on the floor are senior captain Kiara Haugen and junior Ella Hopkins.
Entering the season, Coach Kellen knew what to expect from his starters, but impact from the bench was a question mark. Through the first five games of the season, the bench has definitely proved its ability in helping the team start 4-1. Junior Grace Skinner, sophomore Caroline Daly, and freshman Allie Restovich have played good minutes and helped maintain momentum throughout each contest. Rounding out the bench are sophomores Bryn Billmeier, Taylor Elliott, Ellie Leise, Elyse Palen, Katherine Sieve, and Devon Wald. Growth in his reserve players is key to having a long, successful run this season and Coach Kellen is definitely focusing on that.
Coach Kellen acknowledges the tough road ahead, as the HVL Conference and Section 1AA are always littered with highly competitive teams and this year is no exception. Three games that the coaching staff is looking forward to are White Bear Lake and Rosemount at the Rotary Holiday Classic, and Minnehaha Academy in early January. Kellen states, "Teams in southeast Minnesota always battle each other and any team could win on any given day. These three games will give us the opportunity to play some new teams and see where we fit across the state and across all four classes. As long as we remain healthy, we like our chances." |
