Weekly School Broadcast The Civil Engineering and Architecture class has been hard at work over the past couple of weeks creating house models. The roof types chosen by students are displayed in the top picture: from left to right these roof types are gambrel, hip and shed. Students were asked to show the common structural components of wood frame design in their models such as studs, sheathing, insulation, siding, roofing, vapor barrier, floor joists and roof trusses/rafters.
Students in this course will learn about commercial and residential buildings, building materials and structural elements, property drainage, foundations, and soil testing. In addition, the course will investigate the methods of surveying and soil testing, structural load calculations and methods of architecture drafting using professional architecture software.
Ms. Weiss does a wonderful job bringing buildings to life inside the classroom!!
Academics College Visits look a little different this year! Admissions Representatives are working to connect with students virtually to answer questions and provide information about their institutions. We are scheduling virtual visits during class meeting time and hope all students will take advantage of this opportunity. We recently had virtual visits with University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and University of St. Thomas. Upcoming visits include: Iowa State University (October 27th), St. Olaf College (November 4th), and Luther College (November 11th). In addition to the visits that are scheduled just for Lourdes students, most colleges are hosting virtual sessions for all high school students. One upcoming virtual opportunity being offered by a consortium of six colleges (Amherst, Bowdoin, Carleton, Pomona, Swarthmore, and Williams), called “Applying in the Time of COVID” will be held at 6:00 pm CDT on Tuesday, October 13th. Students must register in advance at https://www.sixcolleges.org/rsvp/. Next week is “Minnesota State Week” and each of the 30 colleges and 7 universities of Minnesota State will be offering special visits — including virtual visits — for high school students. Get a feel for what college is all about and receive a promo code to use the week of October 25-31 to waive your application fee when you apply! For more information, visit https://www.minnstate.edu/minnstatewk/ We are posting many virtual opportunities on the counselors’ google classroom pages for juniors and seniors. We encourage students to let us know if there is a school they would like to learn more about so we can share visit information about that school. Each fall, the junior class goes to the regional Minnesota Education Fair as part of our October college knowledge month activities. Due to the current pandemic, the Minnesota Association for College Admissions Counselors (MACAC) has chosen to cancel all in-person events and instead host a virtual college exploration event for students and parents. You’re invited to participate in an exciting new opportunity: Minnesota’s Virtual College Exploration. This event enables you to hear from admission professionals on topics such as paying for college, application essays, college athletic recruitment, and more. You will also have the chance to learn about 200 colleges and universities (from 32 different states and 4 countries). Virtual College Explorations take place from September 28th to October 14th and is FREE for students and families. Students should register for each session they want to attend. Once they register, they'll receive a confirmation email with their unique link to join the Zoom webinar. When students register, they are sharing their registration information only with the colleges presenting on that particular panel. StriveScan does not sell or share personally identifiable student information with any other third parties. Parents can register using their student information. If you are unable to view the session live, recordings will be made available at a later date. To learn more about the sessions and to register, go to http://www.mn-acac.org/virtualcollege We highly encourage you and your student to consider attending these sessions. Please mark your calendars, 10/14/2020 is a test day for 11th graders. 9th, 10th and 12th graders will not report to school this day. UPDATE: The PreACT for sophomores is being rescheduled for the first week of November. Additional details will be provided in the coming weeks. Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which assesses students' skills in three areas: reading, writing and language, and math. To register for the PSAT/NMSQT please click here. Students must arrive by 7:45am, and will be dismissed at 11:30am-12:00pm. Students need to bring their calculator and #2 pencils. There will be no food services on this test day. If your student must quarantine due to a possible COVID-19 exposure, or is awaiting the results of his/her own test, please notify LHS attendance and have your student contact his/her teachers so that he/she can get homework and/or attend class online. Here is the link to the reopening plan. You may want to check it periodically for changes, we will do our best to communicate what those changes are.
