WEEKLY BROADCAST FEATURED NEWS Fall for Jesus...He never leaves...
SCHOOL NEWS In a special effort to combine the remembrances of All Souls' Day and the cultural practices of Day of the Dead in many Spanish speaking countries, Holy Spirit Catholic School students and staff will be engaging in several activities to remember those who have passed on to live in heaven.
3-4-5th grade students will be using shoeboxes to construct small altars (ofrendras) to remember a special person in their life. Mrs. De La Portilla Rico has informed students of this project and will work with students in class on Friday (October 25th) to get started. This shoebox altar should be completed for our October 30th All Souls' Remembrance Spirit Group activity. Similar to the idea posted here.
K-1-2 grade students are asked to create a mini-altar in a jar for a special loved one or pet who has passed away. This jar (or clear container of some sort) should be brought to school no later than October 30th. If your child has not had a special someone pass away, please choose a special person who is still living they would like to pray for. The mini-altar in a jar can contain any of the following:
On October 30th, students will gather in their K-5 Spirit Groups to learn more about All Souls' Day, the Corporal Work of Mercy "Bury the Dead," the Spiritual Work of Mercy "Comfort the Sorrowing," and the Beatitude of "Blessed are those who mourn..." Students will also have the opportunity to share with others about the person they made their shoebox altar or altar in a jar in honor of. Students will then process to the gym for an all-school prayer service. Students will display their mini-altars on a school-wide altar in the Commons. This altar will stay up for approximately a week to help us remember those whom we love. When the week is over, students will be responsible to take their altars home- perhaps to keep in a special spot in your home.
Students may also be involved in creating traditional Day of the Dead decorations for the ofrendra area in the Commons.
Thank you for helping us assist your children in understanding how our faith enriches, supports, and sustains every area of our lives.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. All kindergarten through 5th grade students are encouraged to dress like a saint for the All Saints' Day Mass on November 1st. After a short saint parade at the conclusion of mass, students will be given time to change into school appropriate clothing (non-uniform day) for the remainder of the school day. Saint costume guidelines: no face coverings or masks. No weapons or simulated weapons as props. Hats that go with saint costumes are allowed to be worn after the completion of mass for the saint parade. Students who choose to participate in the saint dress up day should also bring a card or sheet of paper with three facts about their saint, their saint's name, and the student name. These can be turned into classroom teachers on the morning of November 1st. These clues will be read aloud to other students before we "guess" which saint they came dressed as. All students dressed as saints will also be given a small prize for participating in this special new tradition for All Saints' Day.
