New Program, Brings New Coaches to Lourdes High School Girls' Hockey

Posted: March 8, 2017

Rochester Lourdes High School Athletics has named Jeff True as Head Girls’ Varsity Hockey Coach. Joining him as Assistant Coach for the new program is Laura Vannelli. Coach True and Coach Vannelli will become the first coaches to lead the Eagles Girls’ Hockey program as they begin their 2017-2018 inaugural year.

Coach True is no stranger to Lourdes High School hockey. Since 2013, he has played an essential part in leading the Lourdes Varsity Boys’ Hockey program by serving as Assistant Coach. True is actively engaged in the local hockey community and is presently the Commissioner for the Rochester Adult Hockey League. A lifelong teacher and player of the game, True has been involved in numerous youth hockey programs since his college years, including the Mankato Pee Wees and summer hockey camps in Grand Rapids.

Coach True will be joined by Assistant Coach Laura Vannelli. Coach Vannelli brings more than 10 years of coaching experience. She was the Assistant Girls’ Varsity Hockey Coach for Breck School from 2008-2011, and from 2012-2014 was involved with the Dodge County Girls’ and Boys’ Youth Hockey programs. In her most recent position, Coach Vannelli serves as the Assistant Varsity and Junior Varsity Coach at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, MN. Vannelli attended Gustavus Adolphus College where she was a four-year letterwinner, regular starter, and the four-time recipient of both the Academic All-Conference Award and the All-American Award from 2005 through 2008.

Marv Peters, longtime Lourdes Athletic Director of 40 years, said "We are very fortunate to find two qualified coaches to spearhead our new girls’ hockey program. Their experience, dedication, and devotion to the sport will help guide us through our first year and the many more to follow."

Lourdes High School will end its cooperative agreement in girls’ hockey with John Marshall High School following this 2016-2017 school year. The new program will enter into a cooperative athletic agreement with the Dover-Eyota school district and mirror the partnership presently in place between the two schools as it relates to the boys’ hockey program.

“Both Coach True and Coach Vannelli are excited and enthusiastic to lead the Lourdes/Dover-Eyota girls as we embark on this new program,” said Mr. Peters. “As their first order of business, they will both be integral in the developing the 2017-2018 season’s schedule as well as summer programming.” The first day of practice for the Eagles will begin on October 30, 2017. Rochester Catholic Schools warmly welcomes Coach True and Coach Vannelli.
